Documenting the human journey

Hi, I’m Elmi
Abdulrahim Elmi is an award-winning Somali-British documentary maker whose work sits at the intersection of truth, empathy, and cinematic craft. With a career spanning over a decade, he has directed and produced films that have screened at major festivals across Australia and internationally, earning recognition for his ability to translate complex human experiences into powerful, accessible narratives. His distinct visual language combines intimate cinematography with unflinching honesty, inviting audiences to step inside worlds they might otherwise never encounter.
Before building his independent filmmaking practice, Abdulrahim was the founder of Roots TV, a not-for-profit company dedicated to engaging young people from disadvantaged communities in the art of storytelling. Through Roots TV, he developed hands-on programs in filmmaking, editing, and media literacy, giving hundreds of young creatives the tools to tell their own stories on their own terms. The organisation became a launchpad for emerging talent and a model for community-led media, reflecting Abdulrahim’s belief that who gets to hold the camera matters as much as what gets filmed.
At the heart of Abdulrahim’s practice is a deep passion for human stories. Whether documenting refugee resettlement in Western Australia, exploring cultural identity in regional Australia, or following unsung community leaders, his lens consistently centres dignity, nuance, and lived experience. He believes storytelling is not about speaking for people, but creating space for people to speak through film. This ethos has made him a trusted collaborator with communities and a sought-after voice in Africa documentary landscape.
Abdulrahim’s work has received multiple awards for excellence in storytelling, including recognition for Best Documentary Short and Outstanding Contribution to Social Impact Media. Beyond the camera, he mentors emerging filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds, runs storytelling workshops, and advocates for ethical documentary practice. Currently based in Australia, he is developing a new feature-length project that continues his mission: to move audiences from empathy to understanding, one human story at a time.
